A newly published study explored how visible (Vis) and near-infrared (NIR) technology can be used to identify different beef production systems and support beef label claims. Researchers found that by analysing the unique spectral “fingerprint” of beef, these tools could distinguish between production systems such as grass-fed, feedlot and other farming approaches with promising levels of accuracy.
The research also showed that portable scanning devices may offer a practical, lower-cost option for verifying production claims directly at abattoirs, grading facilities or processing plants. While more testing is needed under real commercial conditions, the technology has the potential to strengthen traceability, support product authentication, and help reduce the risk of fraud in the beef value chain. As consumer demand for trusted product information grows, innovations like these could play an important role in protecting the integrity of beef markets.
