What is the RMIS Traceability Platform?

The RMIS Traceability Platform connects every part of the red meat value chain — from communal and commercial farms to auctions, feedlots, and abattoirs— through a secure digital platform that captures and shares animal movement data in a standardised way.

This includes:

– GLN (Global Location Number) – your registered location
– GPS coordinates – where the movement happened
– Animal ID – tag or identification number
– Date of movement

How It Works

  1. Register your location
Each user (farmer, auction, feedlot, or abattoir) identifies their location and receives a Global Location Number (GLN) — a unique number linked to that specific GPS coordinates. You will receive your GLN via WhatsApp together with an official GS1 South Africa certificate. This number is geo-fenced on the national map to ensure accuracy, transparency, and visibility for all future animal movement.
  2. Capture movements
When animals are bought, sold, or moved, the GLN is used to record the movement through your existing livestock management system, or the RMIS Movement App (for those not using digital record-keeping software).
  3. Digital data sharing
The livestock management systems are connected to the RMIS Traceability Platform through an API — a digital link that lets systems “talk” to each other. This means the farm’s system can digitally send movement data to the auction or feedlot system — safely and accurately.
  4. Your data stays yours
Only movement data is shared, and only with your consent. Personal or production data is never shared.

How Data Sharing Works

Each user has to generate a Personal Access Token (PAT) on the RMIS Traceability Platform, which is a unique key that gives your chosen livestock management system permission to share your movement data. This ensures privacy, security, and full control over your data at every step.

Traceability Solutions with RMIS

Once your registration is completed, all communication for RMIS traceability solutions will be managed through WhatsApp for ease and accessibility. You will receive an official GS1 South Africa Certificate to confirm your unique Production Unit Number, also known as a Global Location Number (GLN). This certificate serves as proof of compliance and forms the foundation for secure livestock traceability.  By linking your Production Unit Number to your current record-keeping system, you will ensure that livestock movement data is captured and shared in a standardised way across the value chain. This makes it possible to respond faster to disease outbreaks, build trust with buyers, and secure access to both local and international markets.

What is a Global Identification Number (GLN)

These numbers, are unique identifiers in the GS1 standard assigned to physical locations within a supply chain.  It enables communication and accurate referencing throughout the value chain.

GS1 facilitates collaboration to strengthen supply chain visibility and efficiency through GS1 Standards. GS1 ensures national and international credibility and alignment with the primary value chain, retail, and export.

The Global Identification Number (GLN) will be used to verify the location of a seller to a buyer. In future, Production Unit Numbers will also be used to request digitised transport documents (such as Articles 6, 8, and health declarations). Additionally, the integration of various recordkeeping systems with the RMIS Traceability Platform will rely on the Production Unit Number as a location reference for sharing traceability data.

Traceability enables a structure to facilitate disease reporting, disease SOP implementation, stock theft, ISO accreditation, ESG calculation, biosecurity, and animal welfare auditing.
