Veterinarians play a vital role in providing assurances of meat safety, particularly concerning animal practices, livestock health and slaughtering. A veterinarian has been appointed to carry out the Veterinarian Public Health functions within the abattoir value chain. The VPH is responsible for visiting abattoirs to conduct a Hygiene Assessment System (HAS) audit. The purpose of this is to evaluate and rate the statutory compliance of the abattoir to the Meat Safety Act and the applicable red meat regulations, on a national basis. This in turn assists with export protocol requirements which is crucial to open additional markets. 

Confidence of consumers in meat safety comes from effectiveness of food control measures (including inspection & certification). This responsibility takes place under the guidance & supervision of vets.
